Cultural Presentation: Valentine's Day & White Day Script It is said Valentine's day was imported to Japan in 1958 by a Japanese confectionary company. Valentine's day is a very big holiday in Japan. Unlike un America, only the women give chocolates to men in their life whom they "owe". Fathers, bosses, friends, co-workers, teachers and classmates will recieve giri choco, or obligatory chocolate, which range from 200-1500 yen and come in an assortment of shapes and sizes. Giri choco is also given to female friends and family if the giver is female. This can be a very socially nerve-wracking day. Girls have the opportunity to confess to the person they love with hand-made, or expensive store-bought, honmei choco. Hand made chocolate is prefered beceause it is a sign the male is that female's "only one". Guys, on the other hand, have to worry about their social status which is expressed by the volume of chocolates they receive. Those that recieve no choclate at all are said to have serious problems with their work and/or home life. This is also a big commercial holiday. On February 14, consumers purchase 25% of Japan's total annual chocolate sales. White day is Japan's own holiday, started by a Fukuoka based marshmallow company in 1977. They advertised white, fluffy mashmallows to men, offering them an "answer day", and an opportunity to give a gift back to the women who gave them chocolates exactly one month before. On March 14, men who received Valentine's Day gifts are expected to give gifts following the rule of sanbai gaeshi, or thrice the return, meaning the White Day gifts given should be at least three times as much as the Valentine's Day gift. Like Valentine's Day, White Day is used as an opportunity for confession and expressions of love between men and women. Flowers, chocolates, cookies, cakes and dates are common gifts. Lingerie is also often given as a White Day gift, but without any sexual inclination. A boss may give all of his female employees underwear and this is generally not viewed as unappropriate or suggestive. While White Day is also a consumer's holiday, Valentine's Day is the bigger money maker. Regardless, vendors do not miss the opporunity to make a sale, putting up large signs so no man can claim to have simply forgotten. Some girls only buy Valentine's Day chocolates for the gifts they will recieve on White Day, but others value and look forward to these two days with high hopes of a lasting romance.
